DON’T RUN FROM SHADOWS – LET THEM LEAD YOU
As a photographer I love to get outside on a beautiful day because there is nothing better to shoot in than gorgeous, natural light. It’s real, it’s pure and the force it brings is creative. We can’t perfectly control the time of our shoots and it’s impossible to control the weather so when the forecast turns from sun mixed with clouds to straight, direct sunlight; don’t run from the shadows and follow their lead.
Placing your subject in direct sun is scary because the harsh shadows it casts are often unflattering; therefore, we most comfortably opt for backlight or open shade. Our comfort zones rarely fail us and stepping outside of them would be like skydiving! No way! The call here was “hey, Lori, it’s Mother Nature; change in plans this morning – it’s going be super sunny; sorry for the late notice but I’m feeling bright and spontaneous today!” Embracing instant change gives us power to think “right now”, “this minute”, “without hesitation”. It’s power to own our ideas. And, there is magic in owning something you didn’t buy.
In this photo, Carsyn was sitting in a field surrounding a golf course. The sunlight was pouring in causing hard shadows across her face so my assistant positioned a reflector to soften the light – letting Carsyn’s eye and cheek poke through. Then, Carsyn, the ham that she was, picked up the biggest leaf we’ve ever seen and we went with it! We took several shots in the field under the sun and this is one of my favorites.
So, step out of your zone allowing darkness to meet light; for if you wait to get comfortable the sun may have set and the shadow will own the power you got for free.
Until next time,
